“The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book?”

– Sir David Attenborough

Overview

This tour program ‘A Day with the Gentle Elephants’ is a one-day tour program created for travelers who stay in Kuala Lumpur who would want to explore and learn about Malaysian wildlife specifically on our wild elephant’s Conservation program.

It also made it possible to combine this tour with the Mystical Evening Fireflies tour or on the longer Peninsula Road Trip. The best thing about this tour is the exposure to how our Wildlife Department saves injured or separated baby elephants from the herd in the wild. Visitors/travelers could also take activities to feed and perhaps bathe with the baby elephant by the river nearby.

Itinerary

Batu Caves Hindu Temple will be the first stop to visit after I pick you up from your hotel. Here you shall spend between 30-45 minutes experiencing the climb of 272 rainbow stairs up into the cave where nestled inside is the Lord Murugan shrine.

Deerland Park

Upon arrival in Kuala Gandah, we shall make a visit to a local mini-zoo run by one of the villagers- an animal and wildlife lover and also nature enthusiast, Pak Abdullah. Have the chance to hand-feed deers, watch a few species of birds and perhaps get hugs with the phytons snakes.

Elephant Conservation Center, Kuala Gandah

Since 1974, the Malaysian Department of Wildlife & National Park team has been rescuing Asian Elephants whose habitats are being lost to cultivation and development. The elephants then are being relocated to suitable habitats in Taman Negara (National Park). The center was established in 1989 as the base for the Elephants Relocation Team, located in Temerloh of Pahang state, within the Krau Wildlife Reserve. The center’s aim is to create public awareness and support research, which has increasingly become popular as a tourist attraction since its existence was publicized back in 1997.

The center is open to visitors every day during common office working hours. They only closed on the 1st day of Hari Raya (which falls on the 1st of the lunar calendar month of Syawal) which varies from year to year. However, all the activities with the elephants have scheduled programs started from 1330hrs to 1530hrs (on normal weekdays, Saturdays & Sundays) and 1430hrs to 1600hrs on every Friday.

Scheduled activities run by the center

  • Upon arrival, all visitors are required to fill up the registration form
  • A short 20-25 minutes video showing one of the Relocation Team’s real tasks in the Malaysian jungle rescuing the elephants
  • Visitors will then walk into a compound area where the in-house guide will brief and make the introduction of each elephant involved in rescue operations and also a few juvenile elephants that are being separated from the herd
  • Visitors shall take part to feed the elephants with the local fruits supplied by the center
  • Visitors shall have the chance to get together with the mahouts to bathe the baby elephants (subject to weather and river currents conditions)
