Taman Negara Rainforest

Encompassing three states which are Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan with a total size area of 4,343km/sq, the Taman Negara is the largest and most protected rainforest area in Peninsula Malaysia.

Established during the British era, the park was from the initiative of Theodore Hubback, after he managed to lobby and convince those three states’ Sultans to set a side piece of land of their respective states as a protected area. The park was named King George V National Park commemorating England’s King George silver jubilee and renamed Taman Negara after Malaya’s independence.

Taman Negara is located on ancient, sedimentary rocks and is the oldest part of the continent, 57% of the total land area is located below 300m above sea level, it also features a mountainous area which is part of the Tahan Range and the most prominent peak in Peninsula Malaysia is Gunung Tahan (Mount Tahan) at approximately 2,187 above sea level.

The park is managed by the Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National Parks and visitors must obtain an entry permit when entering any of Malaysia’s National Parks.

As part of the Taman Negara day trip from Kuala Lumpur tour package, breakfast is included, so travelers need not worry about packing their own. We aim to serve breakfast at 7:15 am in Jerantut town before making our way to Kuala Tahan to meet our nature guide. Our goal is to arrive at Taman Negara by 8:45 am.

Prior to commencing any activities in Taman Negara National Park, your nature tour guide will assist you in obtaining a Taman Negara permit at the Department of Wildlife and National Park office. The permit, along with other entrance fees, is already included in the tour package. It is important for tourists to bring a travel document such as a passport for the permit application process.

Taman Negara National Park is a protected rainforest that is over 130 years old and boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The Taman Negara tour begins with jungle trekking, allowing visitors to appreciate the biological diversity of Malaysia’s rainforest. Following this, tourists will learn how the indigenous orang Asli people utilize natural resources for medicine and daily tools.

During peak season, the itinerary for our Taman Negara day tour may be subject to modification in order to optimize the visitor experience. For instance, we may rearrange the order of activities such as visiting the canopy walk before embarking on the jungle trek to avoid congestion at popular points of interest.

Please note that the Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National Park has built a walking platform to protect the vegetation and insect nests that are vital for the Taman Negara ecosystem. As such, we kindly request that visitors stay on the walking platform at all times.

One of the activities included in our day trip to Taman Negara from Kuala Lumpur is climbing Bukit Teresek, a popular attraction situated within the national park. The name “Teresek” means “hills” in the local language, and the area is renowned for its picturesque rolling hills and verdant vegetation.

Bukit Teresek offers various hiking trails that meander through the dense rainforest, providing visitors with opportunities to observe a diverse array of flora and fauna, including monkeys, birds, and butterflies. Climbing Bukit Teresek is the most challenging trek as tourists will need to navigate a 1.3 km, 50-degree incline on an uneven trail.

At an elevation of 330 meters above sea level, Bukit Teresek offers breathtaking views of the Taman Negara National Park. On clear days, visitors can even catch a glimpse of Mount Tahan, the highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia, standing at 2,187 meters.

The suspension bridge canopy walk in Taman Negara was constructed in 1992 primarily for researchers to study the organisms that impact tree growth in the tree canopy ecosystem. During the Taman Negara canopy walk, tourists not only get to enjoy the breathtaking views of the rainforest from above but also gain access to the canopy of the tree ecosystem.

To ensure the safety of visitors, the suspension bridge undergoes regular maintenance and upgrading every five years. At one point, the Taman Negara Canopy Walk measured 550 meters in length, making it the longest canopy walk in the world. However, for safety reasons, the first phase of the 220-meter suspension bridge had to be closed, and currently, visitors are only allowed to use the second phase of the 283-meter suspension bridge.

The construction of a new 800-meter suspension bridge is underway and is expected to be completed by April 2023. This new addition will further enhance visitors’ experience on the Taman Negara canopy walk.

The Bateq are known for their nomadic lifestyle, as they travel within the Park in search of food and resources. They are skilled hunters and gatherers and rely on a diet of wild animals, fruits, and honey.

Despite facing many challenges, including the loss of their traditional lands and the impact of deforestation and development in the Park, the Bateq people continue to maintain their cultural traditions and way of life.   • For deposit payment, the remaining balance will be paid in cash on the tour day. We prefer local Malaysian Ringgit currency.
  • Full payment in cash on the tour can be arranged. Only apply for a booking made less than 10 hours before the tour start.

Refund

  • Deposits and payments are fully refundable in the event customer change their mind.
  • To receive a full refund, a minimum of 12 hours notice of cancellation prior to the tour’s scheduled start time is required.

The most common and convenient way is to hire a private or sit-in coach tour or take a bus from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur.

Popular activities include jungle trekking, canopy walking, boat rides along the river, and visiting Orang Asli village.

The best time to visit is from March to September when the weather is drier, and the park is less crowded.

Drop-off at Cameron Highlands can be arranged (with additional charges) However during the rainy season especially December, some roads might be closed due to flood.

The distance between Cameron Highlands to Taman Negara is about 255km or 5 hour drive.
